GPS Basics

How Does It Work?

While GPS technology is a complex technology, understanding the basics is relatively easy. GPS stands for Global Positioning System, a worldwide radio-navigation system formed from a constellation of 24 satellites and their ground stations. The $12 billion GPS satellite network was developed by the United States Department of Defense in the 1970s as way to get precise locations of any object on the Earth.

Twenty-four hours a day, these satellites continuously broadcast high-frequency radio signals so that anyone with a GPS receiver can determine their location anywhere on the Earth. Over time, the U.S. government allowed their GPS system to be used by commercial navigational products, such as GPS. In 2000, the U.S. President declared the end of an intentional degradation of the GPS signal, called "Select Availability," allowing products like FMS GPS to maintain an amazing amount of accuracy.

Question: If you rode with your company vehicles 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, do you think your employees would be more productive and your vehicles managed better?

Of course, the answer is yes!

In today’s competitive marketplace, businesses must operate at peak efficiency, provide timely customer service and still have room to make a profit. Given these realities, it’s often a surprise to business owners to discover areas where cost effectiveness can be greatly improved. Technology is usually the driving force behind such discoveries. The accessibility of the Global Positioning System network (GPS) has given rise to many new applications using this powerful tracking technology. Fleet Management Systems is one of the leading providers of GPS fleet tracking and fleet management solutions. Your industry particularly benefits from FMS solutions. Your fleet usually represents between 50% and 70% of your total fixed assets. These vehicles serve as a billboard for your business, usually carry around expensive equipment and provide transportation for employees to and from the job site. Yet, they leave the office in the morning and return at the end of the day and the owner or manager finds it difficult to confirm that the vehicles did what they were suppose to do and represented their business well throughout the day. You cannot manage what you do not measure! GPS Fleet Management Systems provides solutions that allow you to measure EXACTLY what your vehicles and employees did throughout the day.

How GPS Works

Automobiles and trucks have come a long way since the days of the Model T. Today, a sophisticated onboard computer manages your vehicle's operation. This computer oversees numerous sensors and systems within your vehicle to monitor its performance. Many new services are now available because of new technologies sometimes referred to as telematics, remote diagnostics, or automatic vehicle location (AVL) systems.

GPS works automatically

After our patented technology is installed in your vehicle, our system is able to communicate with your vehicle's onboard computer, interpret the data and transmit important information back to you, your service provider or fleet managers. The GPS system works on nearly all cars and trucks MY96 and newer and heavy-duty trucks MY88 and newer.

Immediate notification of problems

FMS notifies you immediately if a problem is detected and allows your service provider to remotely troubleshoot your vehicle problems online before you even bring your car in for service. Fleet Managers receive periodic reports that describe the mechanical status of their vehicles, how much fuel they are consuming, their fuel efficiency, and whether or not drivers have been speeding. Both Fleet Managers and individual users also receive e-mail 'alerts' if our system detects a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or if the vehicle reaches a service milestone based on mileage. We help you save on your most valuable commodity - Time! In some states, car owners and fleets can even receive a convenient remote smog test.

GPS tracking -- Benefits for car owners and fleets

A vehicle's location is determined with a global positioning system (GPS). When the vehicle is in operation, GPS wirelessly transmits location information in near real time and diagnostic information at frequent intervals to a central computer system. The system analyzes the information and posts the results on a secure web site that has separate user interfaces for both fleet managers and individual drivers.

As you can see, Fleet Management Systems provides practical services for both car owners and fleet managers and that's why our technology makes it easy to manage your vehicles.
